Director for Community
Organizing and Economic
Development
Queens Community House
Location: 74-09 37th Ave.,
Jackson Heights, NY
Purpose: To continue to
build the agency’s Action
Group, a diverse group of
emerging
organizers and leaders
engaged in advocating for
affordable housing, fair
housing
practices, just immigration
policies, financial justice
and local green issues.
The Director will work
directly with the Action
Group; with the Adult
Education
program in supporting a
synthesis between the
agency’s organizing and
civics work
and our ESOL activities; and
oversee various economic
support activities including
organizing work associated
with commencing a credit
union, and work with local
civic
group to support a more
green community. The
director should have an
understanding
of how to translate work
into concrete milestones and
outcomes.
Qualifications: We are
looking for a visionary with
strong planning,
administrative,
organizational, team
building, and communication
skills with a commitment to
social
justice to implement our
community building vision.
The candidate should possess
a college degree, with some
academic credits related to
community organization and
planning, urban planning,
and/ or public
administration and have a
minimum of 3
years community organizing
experience. Organizing
experience should include
campaign work around
housing, immigration and
financial justice. Must have
supervisory experience, as
well. MSW encouraged,
Spanish speaking helpful, as
is work with immigrant
populations. Other
attributes: creative,
flexible, open-minded,
resourceful, multi-cultural
interest and an appreciation
of diverse lifestyles.
Work Schedule: Monday-
Friday, flexible: some days,
some evenings; some
weekends.
Position Available: Mid
December 08. Position runs
through June 2009 with goal
to
extend. 6-month salary
range: Low $20,000s with
full-time benefits.
